Obama commutes dozens more lengthy sentences

Two Central Texas men are among 72 federal inmates to whom President Barack Obama granted clemency Friday.

Among the inmates who received news Friday their sentences had been reduced: Albert Campbell, who was charged in 1995 with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and cocaine base.

Madison Pugh, Jr., of Akron, had a life sentence imposed in 1996 commuted to a 30-year term, depending on enrollment in a residential drug treatment program.

His sentence also will expire March 4.

Obama has granted 944 people clemency, more than the previous 11 presidents combined.

Obama has been commuting prisoners' sentences since 2014 as part of his long-standing effort to reform the US criminal justice system. By contrast, George W. Bush commuted the sentences of 11 inmates. Several have been people from the Quad-Cities.

"Our nation is a nation of second chances, where mistakes from the past will not deprive deserving individuals of the opportunity to rejoin society and contribute to their families and communities", White House counsel Neil Eggleston said in a statement about Obama's commutation push. Most are considered nonviolent offenders, although some were convicted of firearms charges in connection with drug crimes.

Obama isn't setting them all free right away.

With less than three months left in his administration, Obama is expected to order more commutations before he leaves the White House on January 20.
