2 children and woman killed, 3 hurt in Newark stabbing

Authorities were still searching Sunday for a person of interest in a stabbing in Newark that left two children and one woman dead and three others injured.

The stabbings occurred around 4 p.m. Saturday at a Hedden Terrace residence.

Murray said 26-year-old Jeremy Arrington is wanted for questioning, but he is not being named as a suspect. Arrington is also wanted on charges of sexual assault and aggravated assault for an unrelated incident on October 9, authorities said.

Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said that all six of the victims had been stabbed with at least one knife but that "we are not ruling out other weapons at this time" in the attack.

The injured include a 29-year-old and two 13 year olds.

The attack happened in the 100 block of Hedden Terrace around 3:55 p.m.

Police have launched an investigation into the stabbing, with detectives and shocked residents now gathered at the scene. "She just said he forced himself in the house, and then that's when I guess he went off and started stabbing them, I don't know".

"It is hard for me to even speak about this, having young children of my own", Newark Mayor Ras Baraka told the news conference.

"It kind of makes my stomach churn to imagine the kind of horrific scene that took place early this evening".

Authorities said numerous victims were family members and they had been stabbed with a knife or knives.

Essex County prosecutors say 8-year-old Aerial Little Whitehurst and 11-year-old Al-Jahon Whitehurst both died at a hospital shortly after the knife-stabbing attack at a Newark home Saturday.

"We can not harbor this individual, we can not hide this individual", Baraka said.

"As long as he is on the street none of us are safe".

A possible motive for the attack has not been disclosed.

Police are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
