Great Dane Olesen races six clear after record 62 in Turkey

If at times it seemed as if the pace of play was akin to that of a snail, with the final group taking five minutes short of five hours to finally get the work done, Thorbjorn Olesen at least kept his focus to further strengthen his grip on the Turkish Airlines Open at Regnum Carya resort.

Olesen steadies after a mid-round scare to win by three strokes - AFP file picBELEK (Turkey), Nov 6 - Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen clung on as his lead dropped from seven shots to one from mid-round to win the €1 million (RM4.7 million) first prize at the Turkish Airlines Open at Belek.

Olesen is searching for a fourth European Tour win and a third in as many seasons after his victories at the ISPS HANDA Perth International and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Scott Hend, in 34th position, leads the two Australians in the field at 2 under and 13 shots from the lead while Nathan Holman just made the cut at 4 over par.

Four players - American David Lipsky (66), Austrian Bernd Wiesberger (66), China's Li Hatong (68), Italy's Matteo Manassero (68) and England's David Horsey (68) - share second at a distant 11-under par.

"I actually slept all right the last couple of days", Olesen told the European Tour website (, when asked how he felt about protecting his vast lead.

Olesen said he was proud of the way he played the round, especially after his 62 the previous day. "The last couple of months have been pretty poor and I haven't played well and all of a sudden you're leading by a big margin and it was hard when you haven't been playing well for that long". "I feel pretty comfortable".

The gap was briefly down to one when Horsey two-putted from long range for a birdie on the par-five 12th, but Olesen birdied the same hole and then produced a superb tee shot on the par-three 14th to set up a tap-in birdie. There's still 36 holes to go, so that's a lot of golf to be played, but I have to keep being aggressive out there.

Willett, who shot a third round 68, needs to finish fifth or higher if he's to regain the Race to Dubai lead in the absence of the No. 1 ranked Henrik Stenson.

"I just wanted to put a little pressure on early doors and thankfully was able to do that, but just ran out of a bit of steam there on the back nine".

"I've just got to go very low and make a lot of birdies".
