Utah Officer Struck and Killed Respond to Pursuit Marking Department's First Line of Duty Death

Three people were taken into custody after West Valley City police officer Cody Brotherson was killed during a pursuit early Sunday morning, reports CBS Salt Lake City affiliate KUTV.

Officers and colleagues salute at the scene where a West Valley City police officer died after he was struck by a vehicle during a chase Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016, in West Valley City, Utah. Officers responded to the scene and saw the three people steal a auto from the parking lot of the apartment complex.

The three suspects are in custody after their vehicle left the roadway a short distance away and came to rest.

The officer had been in a pursuit with the suspects that ended near 4100 South 2200 West at 3:30 a.m.

The investigation started in West Valley City, and the male officer was killed in nearby Taylorsville, Vainuku said. For some reason the officer got out of his auto and had been standing towards the road when the suspect vehicle hit him.

After hitting Brotherson, the vehicle went off the road and came to rest a short distance away.
