Paul Ryan declares a 'mandate' for Donald Trump

US House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, who sparred with Donald Trump at times during his presidential campaign, pledged on Wednesday to work closely with the president-elect to forge an aggressive Republican legislative agenda from the outset of 2017.

The Trump-Ryan relationship will be one of the most intriguing - and consequential - in the coming months as the president-elect seeks to put his stamp on Washington. "He connected in ways with people no one else did".

Ryan said his relationship with Trump is "fine", and when asked about their squabbles, Ryan replied, "I don't worry about things like that". "We won more seats than anyone expected - and much of that is thanks to Donald Trump", he said.

"We just spent a great bit of time together, and we're going to do some absolutely spectacular things for the American people".

Moreover, Steve Bannon, Trump's campaign CEO and the chairman of the right-wing website Breitbart News, has historically been at odds with Ryan.

As the scale of Trump's Electoral College victory became apparent Wednesday morning, Ryan focused on reconciling with Trump and credited the president-elect with minimizing losses for congressional Republicans.

He initially declined to endorse Trump in the spring. Ryan said recently that he would like to remain in his current position as House speaker.

It's was Trump's first visit to the Capitol Building since his election.

Along with Ryan, they were expected to seek re-election to their leadership posts.

Ohio Senator Rob Portman who after the Access Hollywood tape said he could no longer support Trump now says he look forward to finding common ground. Ryan says Republicans in congress will work "hand in hand" with the next president "to advance an agenda to improve the lives of the American people".

A new speaker will be elected by all members of Congress in January.

Other GOP converts include Senator John Mccain who Trump criticized during the campaign. "I'm excited about that and we're going to coordinate with our president-elect on just what they're hoping we can achieve in the lame duck". Chuck Schumer (center, D-N.Y.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) drive nails into a piece of lumber at the First Nail Ceremony outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on September 21, 2016.

"We will honor the timeless principles that our country was founded on; liberty, freedom, free enterprise, consent of the governed", Ryan said.

Ryan, for his part, appears to be trying his utmost to unify the party under Trump.
