Tinder adds transgender options in bid to improve diversity

Tinder announced earlier Tuesday on its blog that its latest update allows users to type a word that describes their gender identity. The online service is also adding new protections to prevent transgender users from being harassed or unfairly banned. With the new update, then, comes a better response system to combat harassment, according to Tinder's CEO Sean Rad.

Lees also expressed concerns that people may abuse the gender search function. Founded in 1998 by a trans advocate in honor of trans woman Rita Hester's memory, TDOR has been commemorated every year by vigils and other community-based events.

"Gender is a complex topic and Tinder is a very simple platform".

But in an effort to better recognise the diversity of its users, it now offers 35 different gender options to choose from. Some people are aggressively transphobic and it can be unsafe to not let someone know before meeting or getting intimate with them, Wintour said. "That is going to end".

Tinder is now asking people who were wrongfully removed from the app because they were reported to get in touch so that they can be reviewed and reinstated.

A statement from the company read: "We haven't had the right tools to serve our diverse community in the past, but that changes today".

"I think dating is one of the big frontiers in our movement", James said. Several transgender users had their accounts flagged because people were reporting the accounts for being "fake" in the past, Rad said. That chips away at that shame that leads to harassment and violence. Lucky for you, Tinder has added dozens of new gender preferences!

These include the identity terms "Gender Fluid", "Two-Spirit", "Pangender" and "Neither".

UPDATE: 2:15 a.m. EDT - There are still conflicting reports coming in about the status of Tinder, with more users saying their matches and conversations on the dating app are restored.

Thanks to a partnership with GLAAD, users can now enter a drop down menu of nearly 40 genders when signing up for Tinder or write in the one that most describes them.
