Anti-Trump Protests Continue, Focus on Inauguration Day

Demonstrations protesting the US presidential election victory of Republican Donald Trump entered their second week on Monday, with thousands of students chanting phrases like "Not My President" after walking out of classes across the country.

Cislo and other participants said they also were disturbed by recent stories they'd heard about what Cislo called "hate crimes" against members of such groups, although she said she knew of no specific incidents involving Longmont High School students.

Social media posts and flyers promoting the demonstration have been circling since Monday, when students at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md., staged a walkout.

Another protester told AFP she hoped the U.S. system of using an electoral college to elect presidents could be changed.

"Seattle is a diverse community, and it's our immigrant/refugee populations, LGBTQ folks, religious diversity and colorful mix of racial demographics that makes us who we are", Franklin student Quinn Angelou-Lysaker said in a news release.

Protest in the United States against President-Elect Donald Trump has continued into the second week with thousands of people marching on the streets to protest against his presidency. "This is a reminder that we have to keep fighting", said Trinity Goss, a protest organizer at the University of Arizona.

"As [high school] students we don't get to vote but we're going to be suffering the greatest consequences of what's happened in this election", Nico, a high school senior at Wilson who helped organize the protests, told a WUSA9 reporter.

Demonstrations in Portland, Oregon have at times been violent over the last week, but the students' protest was peaceful.

School officials said the walkout was organized by students. "Some students held signs saying Rise Up and Together We Stand".

Once Trump becomes president and starts making policy decisions, that could crystalize opposition and focus people's attention on certain issues, he said. "I don't want future generations to grow up in a racist country", Mondesir said.

Between stops, they marched through the streets, waving anti-Trump signs, belting anti-Trump chants, mimicking the "adult" protests seen throughout the city over the previous five days but without the vandalism and threat of violence from anarchists.

"These are important conversations that need to take place".

"The Metropolitan Police Department will ensure all protests are handled in a professional and safe manner", police spokesperson Karimah Bilal said.

Funk said the outcome of the election made him disappointed in America, and walking out of school with his classmates felt like one way to express that.

If the students leave campus, they will be marked with an unexcused absence unless parents send a note excusing the absence within three days, the letter says.
