NYC mayor: We'll sue if Trump makes Muslim registry

The city is prepared to sue the feds and increase taxpayer spending on legal help for immigrants under President-elect Donald Trump. The venue he chose had hosted Abraham Lincoln in 1860 for a speech questioning the spread of slavery.

"We New Yorkers will stand together", de Blasio said.

"The president-elect talked during the campaign about the movement that he had built", de Blasio said.

De Blasio added that New York City would defy the Trump administration if it demanded the city escalate stop-and-frisk tactics for its police.

"If all Muslims are required to register, we will take legal action to block it", de Blasio said.

The loudest reaction from the audience came when the mayor announced, "If the Justice Department orders local police to resume stop and frisk, we will not comply".

De Blasio also promised to push back on deportations, should Trump decide to take that route, and pledged to ensure women's health needs are met if Trump cut funding to Planned Parenthood, the Daily News reported. "If Jews or Muslims or members of the LGBT community or any community are victimized or attacked, we will find their attackers, we will arrest them, we will prosecute them".

And when a reporter asked him about City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito's analysis of how much Trump's immigration policies would cost the city, he said his office is looking at all the reports but does its own research.

"I think we'll be able to do some pretty good data snapshots about what's at stake both in terms of what's going to happen in Washington, how that will trickle down on the state and then how that can affect New York City", Stringer said.

The poll was also best for Mr.de Blasio because it showed him maintaining his strong support among black voters, 71 percent of whom approve of his job performance, with 61 percent saying he deserved re-election. She said she hoped de Blasio's message of racial inclusion goes "viral", so that people fearful of Islam can open their minds.

But Trump won Staten Island - with 56.9 percent of the borough vote to Clinton's 40.2 percent. "That there is not a mandate in this election for division or for undercutting opportunity".

De Blasio kicked off his re-election bid last week and has already secured the backing of three major labor unions. "We have always been the progressive capital of this country". De Blasio said the city will "never turn over" paperwork from the municipal ID card program used by many undocumented New Yorkers.
