Weird twists emerge in killing of ex-Jets star

The body of former NFL player Joe Mc Knight lies between the shooter's vehicle at left and his Audi SUV at right as the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office inve

Former NFL player Joe McKnight has been shot to death following an argument at an intersection with another motorist outside New Orleans.

A man who shot and killed a former New York Jets player in an apparent outbreak of road rage outside New Orleans Thursday afternoon has been released without charges, sheriff's deputies told NBC News.

Former NFL running back Joe McKnight was fatally shot during an apparent road-rage incident while standing beside a man's vehicle at a suburban New Orleans intersection, authorities said Friday. When the victim called the phone number, an individual, later identified as Ronald Gasser told the victim he was the one driving the red pick up truck.

But at a press conference Friday, Sheriff Newell Normand insisted, "Mr. Gasser did not stand over Mr. McKnight and fire shots into him", adding that Gasser was in his vehicle when he opened fire.

Following the McKnight shooting, Gasser was interviewed by JPSO authorities and later nreleased although the investigation is on-going. Glaser allegedly fired multiple shots and McKnight was pronounced dead at the scene.

McKnight's vehicle and one driven by Ronald Gasser, 54, were found side by side at the intersection, Sheriff Newell Normand said.

Normand has said it will be up to the District Attorney's Office to file charges against Gasser.

Normand, who dispelled rumors that Gasser had any connection to law enforcement, said authorities are still investigating whether he had a license to carry a weapon. He said he was also shocked to hear the news Thursday evening."It's just a tragic loss", he said.

A verbal altercation began between the driver who called the number and Gasser.

McKnight, who police say was unarmed on Thursday, was a standout at USC before he was selected by the New York Jets in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Col. John Fortunato is a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Authorities said they are trying to determine why it was dismissed. McKnight graduated from John Curtis in 2007.

"For a life to be lost so senselessly is just beyond description", said JT Curtis, McKnight's high school coach, who's been head coach there for almost five decades.

McKnight went on to play at the University of Southern California, where he was hyped as "the next Reggie Bush", the Daily Trojan's website reported.

"I enjoyed the time when he was here and getting to know him as a person".

The Jets organization tweeted: "Rest in peace, Joe McKnight". He played in two games with the Chiefs in 2014 and spent the past CFL season with Edmonton and Saskatchewan.

The white man accused of gunning down black ex-Jets running back Joe McKnight was released from police custody early Friday - as officials contradicted witness claims the athlete was killed as he lay helpless in the street. "Ultimately, if we were to book him we would end up in a preliminary examination and (have to) prove that we had probable cause for an arrest".
