United Nations Drops Wonder Woman as Honorary Ambassador Amid Controversy

The decision to end the Wonder Woman campaign follows online protests from some who felt that the character's sexualized representation sent the wrong message to girls and women.

The UN did not provide further details as to why the Wonder Woman campaign was ending this week, but spokesman Jeffrey Brez said campaigns using fictional characters often last no longer than a few months.

Of all these, Wonder Woman always seemed the most fitting appointment.

A United Nations spokesman confirmed to Reuters that the empowerment campaign will end this Friday, though he did not provide a reason for the decision.

The decision to drop the scantily clad, curvaceous comic book superhero within two months of her appointment came after almost 45,000 people signed an online petition in protest at her appointment.

Her tenure looked uncertain even on the day of her appointment in October when dozens of UN employees protested against it at the UN Headquarters in NY.

Representatives for the United Nations did not elaborate as to why Wonder Woman's ambassadorship would be coming to such an abrupt end. "The objective was to reach out to Wonder Woman's fans, and I think we did a great job of that".

Coinciding with the superhero's 75th anniversary, the designation also launched a global campaign supporting the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goal No. 5 to "achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls".

Ms Simmons said the release next year of a special-edition Wonder Woman comic book on the empowerment of women and girls, announced in October, was still planned.

"Real life women can and should hold roles for female empowerment and equality for the UN". Created by psychologist and writer William Moulton Marston, his wife, psychologist Elizabeth Holloway Marston, and artist H.G. Peter, Wonder Woman has become one of DC Comics' most iconic heroes since her debut in 1941.

But nothing in the announcement - which was unveiled in a glitzy ceremony feauring Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in the 1970s TV show, and Gal Gadot, who took on the role in Batman V Superman - suggested it would end so soon. Wonder Woman's ambassadorship, which was meant to run through 2017, formally ends on Friday. Past U.N. honorary ambassadors include Winnie the Pooh, Tinker Bell, and Angry Birds.
