National Geographic Features Transgender Kid on the Cover

The two covers of Nat Geo's Gender Revolution issue

Perhaps now more than any time in modern history have transgender issues been at the forefront of a worldwide discussion.

Though Jackson only appears on the subscriber version of the magazine, the newsstand version will still feature transgender, intersex, and other non-binary people on the cover.

National Geographic's "Gender Revolution" issue coincides with a documentary featuring Katie Couric that airs in February.

The new issue will be available on newsstands on December 27 and online in its entirety here on January 3. "Thank you for featuring Avery!", capping her tweet with the hashtag "#transisbeautiful".

Jackson rose to stardom past year when she began documenting her transition with "Avery Chats", a series of YouTube videos describing how she came to understand her identity at such a young age and eventually came out to her parents as trans.

But it's not just transgender issues that will captivate National Geographic readers when they crack open the "Gender Revolution" issue.

According to Attn:, Avery's family have been outspoken proponents of transgender rights for years.

"People often ask me if I always knew I was transgender", Shon told us. Showing the "everyday" aspects of being transgender (or any gender, or no gender) is exactly what the magazine wanted to do.

"Youths are articulate and smart and key observers, and they don't have a social veil, "National Geographic editor-in-chief Susan Goldberg told NBC Out". Avery's story is one of a tapestry of experiences with gender that spans more than 100 children and teens around the globe and makes up the Nat Geo foray into gender, which is at once a closely held tenet of each person's identity as well as, at times, a political flashpoint.
