Boris Johnson Meets Donald Trump Aides In New York

Boris Johnson has flown to NY for the United Kingdom government's first formal face-to-face meetings with Donald Trump's administration, hours after the prime minister declared the president-elect's remarks about women unacceptable.

Asked "as a woman" how she felt about the comments, Mrs May told Sky News: "I think that's unacceptable, but in fact Donald Trump himself has said that and has apologised for it".

Johnson was due to meet Trump's chief strategist, Steve Bannon, and the president-elect's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, on Sunday evening before traveling to Washington for talks with congressional leaders. He will also meet key Republican figures in Washington DC, including House Speaker Paul Ryan. Despite speculation that Mr Johnson could meet the president-elect, it is understood that no such meeting is planned.

The Foreign Secretary's visit followed talks between the Trump camp and Theresa May's closest advisers Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill.

Boris Johnson has flown to NY for meetings with senior members of Donald Trump's team just hours after Theresa May labelled the US President-elect's controversial comments about groping women "unacceptable".

"The discussions will be focused on United Kingdom -U.S. relations and other foreign policy matters", they added.

Johnson arrived in the US after Prime Minister Theresa May stressed the importance she places on forging links with the new administration as Britain seeks to expand trade and security co-operation after Brexit.

It is Johnson's second visit to NY as foreign secretary.

Although an official date has not yet been confirmed, it is expected to take place within weeks of Trump's inauguration on January 20.

Boris Johnson will now begin to meet with the new Trump administration.

"I look very much forward to meeting Prime Minister Theresa May in Washington in the Spring".

The status of the special relationship between the two long-time allies has faced fierce speculation ever since Mr Trump won the U.S. presidential election.

Trump shocked British authorities lately by recommending anti-EU campaigner Nigel Farage as the British ambassador to the USA, an unconventional offer dismissed by Johnson.

"I think that is something that is optimistic and positive for the United Kingdom for the future".

In a statement, Trump, who is now on holiday at his Mar-a-Lago beachfront resort in Palm Beach, Florida, said the election "represents a movement that millions of hard working men and women all across the country stood behind and made possible". "We will be able to have control of our borders, control of our laws", May said.
