USA hits Islamic State with largest-ever non-nuclear bomb

As Donald Trump has promised to start an arms race, we take a look at the futuristic weapons being developed for the United States military.

Mr Stump said the bomb was dropped on a group of caves and bunkers, believed to be used by Islamic State in Afghanistan, an affiliate group known by its U.S. military acronym of "ISIS-K".

"We have the greatest military in the world, and they've done a job as usual".

The US military headquarters in Kabul said in a statement that the bomb was dropped at 7:32 p.m. local time.

The strike used a GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb dropped from a USA aircraft.

U.S. officials say intelligence suggests Islamic State is based overwhelmingly in Nangarhar and neighbouring Kunar province.

Asserting that the United States takes the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) very seriously, Spicer said that USA has denied operational space to the terror group in order to defeat them.

Estimates of its strength in Afghanistan vary.

'At 7 p.m. local time in Afghanistan last night the US military used the GBU 43 Weapon. "So we have incredible leaders of the military and incredible military, and we are very proud of them, and this was another very very successful mission", Trump said.

Foreign policy experts said that it appeared the use of a specialized weapon like the GBU-43 had more to do with the type of target - tunnels - than the United States sending any message to other countries by using such a powerful weapon. "It is upon us, Afghans, to stop the #USA".

Afghan Defence Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said: "No civilian has been hurt and only the base which Daesh used to launch attacks in other parts of the province was destroyed". He said there has been heavy fighting in the area in recent weeks between Afghan forces and IS militants.

With a 300 blast radius, the MOAB is a 21,600-pound, GPS-guided missile that is the biggest non-nuclear bomb in America's fearsome arsenal of weaponry.

The huge bomb, delivered via an MC-130 transport plane, has a blast yield equivalent to 11 tons of TNT, and the weapon was originally designed as much to intimidate foes as to clear broad areas. ISIS is also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The target was close to the Pakistani border.

Achin district governor Esmail Shinwari said the bomb landed in the Momand Dara area of Achin district.
