Colorado Dispensaries Make Bank On Recreational Marijuana

Medical marijuana in Iowa is currently restricted to CBD oil

"Children in other states are given an opportunity to thrive with the use of cannabis, which is often a safer and more effective medication".

NY recently expanded its medical marijuana program by adding chronic pain, but there is an important group of patients who are still left out - those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

A group of patients, caregivers, and medical professionals gathered at the Texas State Capitol on Tuesday to urge lawmakers to allow hearings on critical medical marijuana legislation.

The increase in illicit marijuana use and marijuana use disorders were 1.4 percent and 0.7 percent higher, respectively, in states that had legalized medical marijuana, compared with states that had no MMLs.

And while a few studies have tried to determine how these laws affect illegal marijuana use, this new study is the first to use data collected prior to any medical marijuana laws to track changes in illegal use rates.

California was the first state to legalize medical cannabis in 1996, followed by Oregon, Alaska, and Washington in 1998, ME in 1999 and Colorado, Nevada and Hawaii in 2000.

The analysis revealed that between 1991-1992 and 2012-2013, states that had passed MMLs saw a greater increase in illicit marijuana use and marijuana use disorders than states that had not legalized medical marijuana.

In 1992, no Americans lived in states with medical marijuana laws.

She told MedPage Today that most previous studies examining the impact of MMLs on recreational use have focused on usage among teens.

Marijuana legalization laws don't appear to increase the use of the drug among teenagers. Those surveyed who were diagnosed with a cannabis use disorder may have received a different diagnosis under the new standards.

The study included survey data analysis from 118,497 adults completing the National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey (1991-1992), the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (2001-2002) or the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III (2012-2013). In the DSM IV, cannabis abuse and dependence were separate disorders and neither withdrawal nor craving were criteria for a dependence diagnosis.

It should also be noted that requirements for a cannabis use disorder-a condition far less risky and prevalent than other kinds of drug and alcohol abuse-have changed since the three surveys were conducted.

Medical marijuana use is now legal in 29 states and Washington D.C.

"Medical marijuana laws may benefit some with medical problems", the researchers wrote.

The study notes some limitations.

Both groups said the plant could drastically curb symptoms associated with autism and PTSD, and possibly replace multiple drugs with harmful side effects.

Increased legalization of marijuana for medical purposes may be fueling illicit use of the drug, as well as increasing the number marijuana use disorders, according to the results of a new study.

Hasin said the availability and the marketing surrounding marijuana in these states may "normalize the use" of the drug for adults.
