India to play Champions Trophy

India to play Champions Trophy

Putting an end to all the speculation, the BCCI on Sunday cleared India's participation in the ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales at its Special General Meeting in New Delhi.

Changes to revenue-sharing arrangements and governance had seen the country's cricket board threaten to pull the team from the competition, which takes place in the United Kingdom in June.

The dispute intensified when India did not submit a squad for the one-day worldwide tournament by an April 25 deadline after its cricket board (BCCI) failed to stall a new income model being adopted by the global Cricket Council (ICC). The COA had prevailed over the members on the need to select the squad for the tournament without prejudice to the BCCI. "The Supreme Court passed a judgement that he won't be allowed to attend the ICC meeting but it was never clarified whether he is ineligible to attend the SGM", a senior BCCI official conveyed the news in an interaction with PTI. "You are aware that the squad representing #India at the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 was to be submitted by 25th April 2017 but the squad has not even been selected as yet", the administrators told BCCI joint secretary Amitabh Choudhary in an email.

While doubts persisted over India's participation in the Champions Trophy, in which they are the defending champions, several former cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, had said India must play the tournament. The standoff continued further when the revenue model was revised and the BCCI again rejected the ICC's proposal of an additional 100 million, at where the original is 293 million.
