Greg Gianforte Apologizes For Body Slamming Reporter After Winning Election

I should not have treated the reporter that way.

During Fox News' coverage of the incident, it pointed out that three of its reporters had been eyewitnesses and confirmed the confrontation between Gianforte and Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs. Montana's major newspapers withdrew their endorsements of Mr Gianforte on Thursday.

Gianforte carried the night, as expected, given that Montana has not sent a Democrat to the House in 20 years, but not without an explosive final 24 hours of the race that already casts a dark cloud over his victory.

Montana police have charged Gianforte with misdemeanor assault for allegedly "body-slamming" Jacobs on Wednesday after being questioned about the American Health Care Act. But after Gianforte declared victory, he apologized for his actions. "I should not have responded in the way that I did, and for that I'm sorry", he said.

Perhaps Gianforte viewed his violent attack as an asset to his campaign, rather than a scandal that would threaten his chances at the last minute.

But after he was declared the victor, Gianforte apologized for the attack. According to Fox News' Alicia Acuna, "Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him". Ryan would not say whether he and fellow House Republican leaders would agree to seat Gianforte should the candidate win but the Speaker suggested that the wishes of Montana voters would be respected.

Gianforte's victory is a boost for Republicans, who are anxious Trump's political stumbles and increasing unpopularity may cost the party its House majority in 2018 elections.

Kelly said there are 114 other Republican-held districts with more favorable partisan makeups for Democrats than the Montana seat. "Donald Trump's his model", she said. Republican Gianforte received only 67.9% of President Trump's November vote total.

"...and I took an action that I can't take back", the politician continued, adding, "I'm not proud of what happened".

Even if he were found guilty and served the maximum sentence-six months in Montana-Gianforte could still serve in Congress.

"Tonight, as Greg was giving a separate interview in a private office, The Guardian's Ben Jacobs entered the office without permission, aggressively shoved a recorder in Greg's face, and began asking badgering questions", his office said in a statement after the candidate allegedly attacked the reporter.
