IAS officer dies in Delhi pool, family cries foul

Attempts were made to administer CPR to the deceased and he was rushed to Fortis Hospital, where he was declared brought dead at 12.50 am, Additional DCP south, Chinmoy Biswal said.

Police said the victim, Ashish Dahiya, was partying with his friends at the pool, located inside the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) in south Delhi's Vasant Vihar.

Police said his family was informed about the unfortunate death and they have reached Delhi.

Police said that statements of eye witnesses reveal that while swimming, a lady officer probably had an accidental slip into the pool and many young officers, including the deceased, attempted rescuing her.

As the lady officer was safely pulled out, it was noticed that Ashish was missing. "It is unlikely that he would drown in a pool, if there is no foul play involved", said Kuldeep Singh, Dahiya's uncle. The police say by the time they arrived, the officer had been taken to hospital by his colleagues.

In a separate message, Mufti also condoled the death of Dahiya and conveyed her sympathies to the bereaved family particularly his wife and prayed for his eternal solace.

A 2016-batch officer, Dahiya and his friends from the IFS and IRS had gathered for a poolside party on Monday night at the institute. It is said that they planned to have swimming in the pool in the Institute. "It is hard to believe that a former police officer, an IRS and now a trained IAS, would be such callous", said Kuldeep Singh, Dahiya's uncle. Then, he had applied for the UPSC exam and cleared it. A family member said he was to join his service in Srinagar on Wednesday as an assistant collector.

Police officers had earlier mistakenly described the dead man as a trainee IAS officer.

Singh also told that Ashish had also won the director's gold medal a fortnight ago during his IAS training.
