Bill Maher apologizes for using racial slur during 'Real Time' interview

Television talk-show host and comedian Bill Maher drew harsh criticism on Saturday for using a racial epithet on his HBO series "Real Time" in an interview with a United States senator from Nebraska.

Shortly after 10 p.m., Mr. Maher, the comedian and host of HBO's "Real Time", was talking to Mr. Sasse on his program about the boundaries between adolescence and maturity, and how adults in California still dress up for Halloween. "Senator, I'm a house [N-word]" Maher said.

"No, it's a joke", Maher said, breaking the silence.

Maher has so far not issued a statement.

"I've got to get to Nebraska more", Maher replied.

Sasse also responded Saturday on Twitter, saying that he regretted he didn't challenge Maher on the remark immediately, and that "me just cringing last night wasn't good enough". "The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry".

Maher used the racial epithet during an interview with Republican Sen.

The comedian was roundly criticized after the show aired.

HBO previously announced that "Real Time" has already been renewed through 2018.

Many liberal groups have been calling for HBO to fire Maher over the comment.

Sasse added, "The history of the n-word is an attack on universal human dignity".

Social media was, of course, outraged.Deray McKesson, a leader of the Black Lives Matter movement, tweeted his disgust at Maher's actions, writing "But really, @billmaher has got to go". It's therefore an attack on the American Creed.

"Bill Maher's comment last night was completely inexcusable and tasteless".

The episode occurred two days after comedian Kathy Griffin was dropped by CNN after appearing a photograph in which she poses with a bloody model of President Trump's head. "We are removing his deeply offensive comment from any subsequent airings of the show", the statement read. Maher said. "Senator, I'm a house (n-word)".
