SpaceX taking recycling all way to orbit for NASA

SpaceX Dragon all set for its 11th resupply mission to space station

It's an otherwise routine launch that will include one of SpaceX's signature rocket landing attempts afterward.

With more than a handful of successful launches under its belt, SpaceX's repeated trips to resupply the International Space Station have become somewhat routine, but today's mission is still pretty special. The Dragon is the only unmanned supply ship that returns to Earth; the others are filled with trash and burn up on re-entry. It was the first time SpaceX flew a booster that had already soared before on an orbital mission. As SpaceX Vice-President of mission assurance, Hans Koenigsmann said, almost everything about the rocket and ship was reusable. No private company has ever achieved this feat. "Ferrying cargo and crew to space is still expensive, and reusing Dragon will be a key step in helping lower the cost of space access".

Although the company has never placed a hard dollar value on the Dragon, the savings could be considerable. The same craft traveled through space in 2014 to send supplies to the International Space Station, too. At the end of the experiments half of the mice will be returned to Earth in SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft and transported to UCLA for further study, said Stodieck, a scientific co-investigator on the experiment.

The Space Coast can also expect to be rattled by a sonic boom as SpaceX also makes its fourth landing attempt at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Landing Zone 1 less than 10 minutes after liftoff. SpaceX launched its first reused rocket booster in March. SpaceX has successfully landed another six first stages on drone ships out at sea. All four of SpaceX's previous landings at Landing Zone 1 have been ideal touchdowns.

The Dragon is packed with nearly 6,000 pounds (2,700 kilograms) of science research, crew supplies and hardware. If the launch is delayed, the Dragon won't fly until Saturday.

In the latter case, the Dragon is delivering the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), which will become a permanent fixture.

These tests of reusability are created to help reduce the cost of launch objects and eventually people to space.

SpaceX's 230-foot-tall Falcon 9 rocket will carry the Dragon capsule which is 20-foot high, 12-foot-diameter. Less than a year later it was launched again, but this test flight made just one orbit around the Earth, according to CollectSPACE.

NASA and SpaceX are targeting 5:07 p.m. Saturday in the event of a delay, but that would see a drop to 60 percent "go" thanks to the added possibility of rain.
