A video from the subway auto shows a friend presenting Alcantara with a DIY diploma as Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" played in the background. "I addressed the whole train vehicle, thanking them for coming to my graduation".

One of Alcantara's friends who accompanied him on the journey told Gothamist the grad left from Jackson Heights at 8:20 a.m.to make sure he would get to the East 25th Street campus by 10 a.m.

"I took the video because I felt it was so unfair he was missing his graduation", onlooker Nadiya Afzal shared with PEOPLE.

Alcantara's E train grinded to a halt between stations in Queens, apparently as a result of a malfunction that triggered the emergency brakes. After trying to fix the stopped train for an hour and a half, MTA called for a rescue train, adding 30 minutes to his already-enormous delay.

As someone on the train cued up Green Day's graduation classic, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" on a set of speakers, a friend presented Alcantara with a "diploma" drawn up on a cell phone.

Because he missed such an important event, however, his fellow stranded New Yorkers hosted a makeshift graduation ceremony on the crowded subway auto.

Alcantara said his real diploma will be mailed to him.

But Alcantara ended up celebrating his graduation in a quintessentially NY way: on the subway, complete with music and his graduation robes.

While he wasn't able to make the full ceremony, in a way this will end up being a more memorable moment for Alcantara down the road.
