Hawaii defies Trump, commits to the Paris Agreement anyway

President Donald Trump pulled the USA out of the Paris accord last week.

Demand for sustainable investing isn't likely to drop because the momentum on climate change action is "unstoppable", My-Linh Ngo, head of ESG investment risk at BlueBay Asset Management, tells the publication.

Strimling recently joined the Climate Mayors network, a growing coalition of 246 municipal leaders who have committed to upholding the tenets of the Paris Agreement.

Under the Paris accord, the United States pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025. "But, we are happy that India has declared its commitment to the Paris agreement", he said.

To be clear, President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement was shortsighted and foolish.

"Whoever chooses to blindly follow the Trump administration overpowered by its bravado should be fully aware that the judgment of history shall take them all as one", the statement said.

Trump's refusal to sign made the USA one of three countries in the world to reject the agreement.

The primary objective of the agreement is to reduce carbon emission, which is deemed a significant contributor to global warming and climate change worldwide.

Although Hawaii already has strong environmental rules, the new law is the first to directly refer to the standards of the Paris agreement, said Glen Andersen, who tracks energy and climate issues at the National Conference of State Legislatures. She contended, "This is certainly a very misguided, unsafe decision which may be self-serving for Donald Trump and his supporters in the fossil fuel industry". Moving toward reducing emissions and using renewable energy can contribute to job creation and market growth.

The city had switched nearly all street lights to LEDs, getting a 22 per cent return on investment through lower electricity costs; created 405ha of parkland; and through traffic reorganisation and walking zones reduced the amount of time residents spend driving in their cars. "The world can not wait - and neither will we". And we're all in when it comes to the Paris climate agreement.

"It is time to exit the Paris Accord and time to pursue a new deal that protects the environment, our companies, our citizens, and our country", Trump had said while announcing the sweeping step that fulfils a campaign promise while acutely dampening global efforts to curb global warming. He said California, New York and Washington are the initial members, with those states representing more than one-fifth of U.S. Gross Domestic Product. Trump has said that climate change is a hoax created by the Chinese and that he feels the world "is laughing at us".
