Former first minister Alex Salmond loses Commons seat in stunning Tory victory

Jo Swinney on the campaign trail with Tim Farron and Willie Rennie

The results came after an exit poll suggested the SNP could lose 22 seats across Scotland.

Jo Swinson, who has been re-elected to East Dunbartonshire having previously lost the seat to the SNP's John Nicolson in 2015, said: "I recognise all of those who put party allegiance to one side to send a clear message that East Dunbartonshire does not want another divisive independence referendum".

A number of high profile British politicians have also lost their seats, with former first minister and one-time leader of the SNP, Alex Salmond, losing his seat to Tory, Colin Clark, in the Gordon constituency.

Mr Salmond said: "Gordon is the most unbelievable and diverse constituency in the whole of Scotland and I wish you well in representing it Colin".

After winning 56 of the 59 Scottish constituencies in 2015, this time round the SNP lost seats to the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

The SNP have held onto Dundee West and East despite a surge in Tory votes in the city of discovery.

Party leader Nicola Sturgeon described the losses as "disappointing" and said "clearly there's thinking for me to do about the SNP result". Yet the election brought the party some important gains, and there will now be intense debate as to whether Labour voters were lured back from the SNP by opposition to IndyRef2, or by Corbyn's more forthright socialist programme.

Earlier, Douglas Ross of the Tories overturned a majority of 9,065 to defeat the SNP's deputy leader Angus Robertson by 4,200 votes in Moray.

Scottish Conservatives leader Ruth Davidson celebrated a "historic night" for her party north of the border, and stated in one interview the result for the SNP left any prospect of a second independence referendum "dead".

In contrast, the Tory share of the vote went from 15% to 28% as the party's tally of MPs increased from just one to 13.

She paid tribute to Mr Robertson, who had been MP for Moray since 2001, describing him as a "politician and parliamentarian of huge stature, who week after week held the Prime Minister to account, providing the scrutiny that the official opposition in the House of Commons failed to do".

Labour also defeated the SNP to win the Midlothian constituency.

Mr Blackford's supporters say he is popular in the party and would help reconnect with rural communities.

Ms Black became the youngest MP when she won the seat in 2015 at the age of 20, ousting then Labour shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander. Just two votes gave the SNP's Stephen Gethins a further term in North-east Fife against a Lib Dem challenge, while former rock musician Pete Wishart held Perth and North Perthshire for the SNP with a majority of just 21.
