Brooks said Scalise, the House Majority Whip from Louisiana, was hit in the hip, and about four other people were shot.

Police in Alexandria, Virginia have said they are investigating reports of a shooting involving multiple people at a baseball practice on Wednesday.

The suspect, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, from IL, used a M4 assault carbine during the attack, CBS News also confirmed.

Speaking at the White House, Mr Trump said Mr Scalise was "badly injured" but in stable condition and would recover.

Witness Katie Filous said she heard more than 20 shots while walking her dogs near the playing field.

A police officer was hit by the gunman after he got out of a parked vehicle and drew a handgun, according to Filous. We are very fortunate that the Capitol Police were on the scene, and that the Alexandria Police Department and first responders who also arrived nearly immediately.

Congressional officials say the shooting happened at a congressional baseball practice. Both are "doing good", Capitol Police Chief Matthew R. Verderosa said.

Just prior to the shooting at about 7 a.m. two congressmen who left practice early said they bumped into the man identified as the shooter, and he asked them whether the team practicing was Democrats or Republicans. He also said he used his belt as a tourniquet to help one of the victims saying the shooter appeared to be a white male.
