Britain, EU to begin Brexit negotiations on Monday

Following last week's disastrous election, however, the government's mandate to pursue a hardline approach to Brexit appears to have been fatally weakened, with Chancellor Philip Hammond is ready to use a speech at Mansion House on Thursday to warn the prime minister against a "hard" exit from the EU. "I can't negotiate with myself", he said in an interview with several European newspapers. "I think it's unlikely there will be any announcement today", a DUP spokesman told AFP.

Philip Hammond, Britain's finance minister, says protecting the British economy should be the main goal of upcoming negotiations over the country's exit from the European Union. In April, she was tempted by opinion polls that put her Conservative Party 20 points ahead of its Labour rival, and she called the snap election.

May set out her plan for a hard Brexit in January, saying the United Kingdom "cannot possibly" stay in the single market. "There's no doubt about that, but perhaps an opportunity to consult more widely with the other parties on how best we can achieve it", he said at a conference in Poland.

Barnier this week acknowledged "sensitivity" in London at European Union suggestions that Britain might owe it some 60 billion euros in 2019 and said sorting out the issue soon would help a trade deal: "I would like to very quickly play down this question, and find concrete, pragmatic and just solutions", he said on Monday.

She declined to speculate about any change in Britain's plans to withdraw from the European Union following the election, saying, "The citizens have decided, and I assume that we will have to carry out these negotiations".

Among these was whether Britain's position would "be the same as in the letter of March 29" when May triggered the two-year Brexit countdown.

"It's passing quicker than anyone believes".

Mr Verhofstadt urged the European Union to bring forward legislative proposals for closer integration of the remaining 27 member states, to take advantage of the opportunity provided by Brexit and the election of the pro-European Mr Macron.

May said on Tuesday that talks with the DUP had been productive - a view shared by DUP leader Arlene Foster - and that Brexit negotiations would begin as planned next week. "Theresa's atrocious campaign has cast a shadow over these facts", said Farage, who assured that "there is a certainty in this whole bazaar: we will leave the European Union". Even if politics has been extraordinarily volatile over the past year, a reversal of the Brexit vote - which would nearly certainly need another referendum - has an nearly negligible chance of occurring.

She is now seeking an alliance with a hardline unionist party in Northern Ireland to cling on to power.

Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein said the prospect of a British agreement with the DUP was causing anxiety and fear.

"The danger is that however much any government tries they will not be seen to be impartial if they are locked into a parliamentary deal", 1990s Conservative prime minister John Major told BBC radio.
