Mexico Snatches Late 2-2 Draw against Portugal in FIFA Confederations Cup

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo lamented his side's failure to close out victory against Mexico, after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in Sunday's 2-2 draw at the Confederations Cup.

Ricardo Quaresma opened the scoring for Portugal in the 34th minute on a magical assist from Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cedric Soares' 86th-minute shot was deflected in, but Hector Moreno snatched a point in the 91st minute.

Chelsea have also been linked with the Ballon d'Or victor, although Madrid remain determined to persuade Ronaldo to stay put.

"The team had nearly won and we suffered in the last minute, but this is football".

"But we are not anxious, there are two games left, we still have chances".

"We're professionals, we just think about doing our best and going as far as we can at this Confederations Cup", said Pepe, who is out of contract at Real.

Russian Federation manager Stanislav Cherchesov, also present at the press conference, told reporters that Portugal's draw against Mexico did not represent an advantage to Russian Federation.

The second half saw both sides play with more caution, but Portugal looked good to get the "ultimate" goal.

However, Argentinian referee Nestor Pitana called for a review from the video assistant referee and it was eventually ruled Pepe was one of four players who were offside from Joao Moutinho's first cross into the box following the failed set-piece.

Ronaldo's representatives have denied any wrongdoing. And with the imitation of Bavaria's Neuschwanstein Castle looming over the Olympic Park, Germany feels right at home in the 2014 Winter Games host city where it will play two of its opening three matches.

Cedric saved well from Cedric and tipped a deflection from defender Carlos Salcedo over the bar before Portugal finally took a deserved lead.

The Besiktas winger drew Mexico's goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and tapped home the opening goal. In previous years his 50-yard run might have taken him through on goal; this time the Mexico defence caught up but his composure in laying the ball off was a reminder of his enduring quality.

In Moscow, Russia, Arturo Vidal's late header helped Chile to a 2-0 win over Cameroon in their Group B opener as the video assistant referee played a prominent role.
