Tesla on autopilot in 2016 hit truck in explosive cloud of dust

In May 2014, Brown, an avid Tesla fan, crashed into a semi-truck in Florida after his Autopilot-enabled Tesla Model S failed to recognize the white side of the truck against a bright sky.

Tesla notified The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) immediately after the accident occurred.

Tesla's autopilot mode allows a vehicle to maintain the speed of traffic, and an auto-steer function is created to help keep the Tesla inside its lane. According to the report, Brown kept his hands off the wheel for the majority of the trip and also drove about nine miles over the speed limit.

A man died in a crash previous year while using the semi-autonomous driving system on his Tesla Model S sedan. According to the ruling from the National Transportation Safety Board, the Autopilot feature isn't at fault for the accident.

The Model S accident sparked a debate about the vehicle company's partially autonomous driving tools.

Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been found not guilty for a fatal crash connected to one of its cars. They say that "analysis, findings, recommendations, and probable cause determinations related to the crash will be issued by the Board at a later date".

The NTSB found no record of a forward collision warning or automatic emergency braking at the time or the moments leading up to the crash.

According to data retrieved from the wrecked car's computers, the driver, 40-year-old Joshua Brown, traveled for almost 40 minutes before crashing using the autopilot system, and did not have his hands on the steering wheel.

If that weren't enough, vehicle logs show that he ignored six audible warnings to keep his hands on the steering wheel.

Previously, reports said that Brown had been watching a movie at the time of the auto accident, which Brown's family lawyer Jack Landskroner called "unequivocally false".

The NTSB probes only a handful of highway accidents each year in search of broad safety lessons.

The Tesla broadsided the truck, which was crossing the highway near Williston, Florida. The impact killed the Tesla driver, Joshua Brown, who had set the vehicle to a speed of 74 miles an hour in a zone limited to 65 miles per hour. The truck driver also took no action to avoid the crash and was charged with a right of way traffic violation. The cause of the crash hasn't been determined.
