Pregnant Woman Shot Dead by Police After Calling Them for Help: Cops

"[The officers were] talking about they don't know what to do with her, take her to jail, take her to mental health. It's disturbing", Isabell who is also a pastor of The Way of Holiness Church of God in Seattle said.

"Hey! Get back! Get back!" an officer shouts before gunfire erupts.

Police say three children were inside the apartment when the shooting happened.

However, the officers approached her with caution as her home had a "hazard information" warning for any officers responding to calls there, said Detective Mark Jamieson.

Lyles was dealing with mental health issues, according to family.

Monday, authorities released the audio recording, which came from a patrol car's dashboard-mounted camera. Seattle officers are given the option of carrying a taser, pepper spray or a baton as a less-than-lethal option, the paper reports.

The Seattle Education Association says they will be wearing Black Lives Matter shirts Tuesday with a rally in Lyles' honor at Garfield High School at 12:30 p.m.

Furthermore, police forces all over the world are creating very simple solutions to help disarm people with knives or scissors, which Lyles was allegedly holding during a separate incident on June 5. The Seattle Times reported that Charleena is black and the two officers involved in the incident are white.

The officers talk about the woman previously waving large metal shears and trying to prevent officers from leaving her apartment, and making "weird statements" about her and her daughter turning into wolves.

The recording, captured by microphones linked wirelessly to the dashboard video system in the officers' patrol auto, was publicly released in the interest of maintaining "transparency" in the investigation of Sunday's shooting, the Seattle Police Department said.

"We would expect that the Seattle Police Department would deploy people with the right training and the right protocol to unarm, disarm someone that has a knife", NAACP's Kenny Pleasant said.

"Officers were confronted by a 30-year-old woman armed with a knife", the department wrote on its web blotter.

"She was asking them for help with her domestic violence and they wasn't giving her none".

The Seattle Police Department has not confirmed the identities of the officers or their races. She pleaded not guilty to two counts harassment and obstructing a police officer at her arraignment the next day.

Cries from at least one of her children can be heard in the background, according to the audio released Monday, June 19.

Police on Monday released audio of the officers discussing a previous encounter with the woman before they reached the apartment. She lets them in and says, "There was a break-in".

Family members told the paper that the woman was several months pregnant and had been struggling with mental-health issues for about a year, according to The Seattle Times.

The video from the apartment hallway has no audio, but shows the officers entering the apartment. There's no way you could've taken a taser and taken her down?

The officer continued to speak to Lyles, who said she left her apartment unlocked when she went out to the store. At the end of the video, an officer can be seen partially backing out of the doorway with his arms raised.

He added that the investigation will be reviewed by a federal monitoring team supervising a consent decree involving the Seattle Police Department.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray in a statement Sunday called the shooting a tragedy. "This will be fully investigated", he said.
