Trump publicly acknowledges Russia probe includes him

The Washington Post reported this week that Special Counsel Robert Mueller was also investigating the president for possible obstruction of justice, citing unnamed sources, a development that Mr Trump appeared to confirm in his Friday morning tweet.

Richard Burr, R-N.C., right, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., left, listen as Attorney General Jeff Sessions testifies before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence about his role in the firing of FBI Director James Comey and the investigation into contacts between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, June 13, 2017. But Rosenstein is not now heading the FBI's probe into the Trump campaign's possible collusion with a Russian campaign that USA intelligence officials have said was seeking to tilt the outcome of the 2016 election in Trump's favor.

"Mr. Trump's apparent reference to Mr. Rosenstein, who oversees the Russian Federation investigation because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from it, came just hours after an oddly worded statement from Mr. Rosenstein complaining about leaks in the case".

While Mr Rosenstein appointed Mr Mueller as a special counsel to oversee the investigation, it is possible that he could be called as a witness as part of the investigation.

Trump hadn't publicly admitted he was personally under investigation until now. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the widening investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., wrote his own letter, insisting that Rosenstein's hard-earned reputation as an "apolitical actor" was "now imperiled" by the deputy attorney general's role in Comey's firing.

He also said he asked Comey multiple times whether he, himself, was included in the investigation into his campaign's ties to Russian Federation before his 2016 presidential victory.

Rosenstein pledged this week that he would maintain the integrity of the investigation and saw no reason to fire Mueller, despite reports that Trump was considering such a move.

Yet Trump's angry tweets on Friday underscored the near-impossible challenge his advisers and legal team have in trying to get him to avoid weighing in on an active probe.

Trump also lashed out at the media, on a day that aides hoped would be focused on his decision to undo some of Barack Obama's detente with Cuba. An official of Trump's transition confirmed the lawyer's internal order, which was sent Thursday.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she is concerned that Trump might try to fire both Rosenstein and Mueller. Trump fired Comey in May.
