Scottish leader puts second independence referendum on hold

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon delivers a speech during a media conference at the Scotland House in Brussels as she is on a one day visit to meet with EU officials

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has delayed her government's push for a second independence referendum, saying voters are exhausted of being asked to make big decisions and that a vote should only be held once the terms of Brexit become clearer.

Much like May's Conservative Party, the SNP lost a chunk of its seats in the House of Commons. There is a lot of good will on both sides and I am confident that we will be able to secure a deal in everyone's interest. But it appears those plans have been shelved for the meantime - although it was not indicated whether an independence referendum would be taken off the table completely.

Unionists hoping Nicola Sturgeon would use her statement today to call off her plans for IndyRef2 have been left disappointed.

A handout photo made available from the Scottish Parliament on March 21, 2017, shows Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon speaking in the chamber on the first day of the "Scotland's Choice" debate on a motion to seek the authority to hold an indpendence referendum at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.

SPECULATION is growing Nicola Sturgeon is set to ditch her dreams of another Scottish Independence referendum within two years after announcing a speech for this afternoon.

Davidson, in contrast, led the Conservatives to their best result in Scotland in three decades.

Her continuing commitment to holding a vote after Brexit ticks the first box; only time will tell if she has succeeded with the second.

"Some of them just want a break from the pressure of making big political decisions", she said.

The lawmaker stressed the significance of London leaving the European Union single market despite Edinburgh's strong desire to remain a part of it.

She told MSPs the people of Scotland should have a choice about the future direction, but she wanted to give people that choice when the terms of Brexit were clearer.

The Scottish parliament in March backed Sturgeon's bid to hold a new referendum in 2018 or early 2019, but British Prime Minister Theresa May had refused to enter discussions on the proposal.

This statement, which is likely to happen next autumn, would also set out the Scottish Government's view on "the precise timescale for offering people a choice over the country's future", Ms Sturgeon said.

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said: "The First Minister is digging her heels in, putting her fingers in her ears and pressing on regardless".

The June 8 election "has re-opened the possibility, however narrow, of averting a hard Brexit and retaining membership of the single market", she said.
