Donald Trump will speak with Leo Varadkar later today

In his first telephone conversation with the new Irish prime minister, President Donald Trump told the Irish leader that he knows numerous Irish in America and he feels like he knows all of them.

According to a note of the conversation, they agreed to continue strong co-operation between Ireland and the U.S. on economic issues as well as shared cultural and family ties. I know so many of them, too.

Trump congratulated Varadkar on his "great victory".

The spokesperson, added the report, said the issue of a visit by Mr. Trump to Ireland was not discussed but that both men had agreed that the next time they would see each other would be in the White House next March.

Varadkar took office as prime minister, or taoiseach, earlier this month after winning the leadership of Ireland's ruling centre-right Fine Gael party.

"Promptly we were removed from the Oval Office so that the president and the Taoiseach could get on with the substance of the phonecall", she told RTÉ radio afterwards.

According to reports the pair spoke for fifteen minutes and discussed issues ranging from Brexit to climate change.
