Sony Is Bringing Vinyl Back - for the First Time in 28 Years

What was old became new again, and consumers began thrifting old players and records, building up their collections from dust bins and dime deals, slowly bringing the market back from death. Sony Music Entertainment announced earlier this week that it will start making vinyl records once again, ending a hiatus of close to three decades.

Sony's Vinyl Comeback After Nearly 30 Years

But vinyl has been making a global comeback as it attracts not only nostalgic older consumers but also younger generations, with many fans saying it has a superior sound quality.

Sony's new factory will become just the second active vinyl pressing house in the region, alongside Toyokasei, which Sony hopes will place it in a good position to respond to customer demand. The phonograph disc record, commonly known as vinyl record, was the king of music reproduction throughout the twentieth century.

And vinyl revenue forecasts are still a long way off their peak in the late 70s and early 80s, when more than half a billion records were sold annually in the USA alone. "A lot of young people buy songs that they hear and love on streaming services", Sony Music CEO Michinori Mizuno said. But in 2016 while CDs took a backseat to streaming (on-demand audio streaming surpassed total digital sales for the first time ever), vinyl hit a 25-year high with 13 million sales according to Nielsen.
