Abu Dhabi airport exempt from United States ban on laptops

Last week, the United States unveiled security measures for flights to the country created to prevent the expansion of the ban to more countries that could cause major logistical problems and deter travel.

The United States on Sunday lifted a ban on laptops in cabins on flights from Abu Dhabi to the United States, saying the United Arab Emirates' Etihad Airways had put in place required tighter security measures.

TheU.S. does not have jurisdictions over foreign airports, but has authority over airlines that have direct USA bound flights.

The ban was implemented after intelligence officials learned of efforts by the ISIS group to fashion a bomb that could be secreted inside such devices.

The Department of Homeland Security announced on Wednesday the US would be unveiling new aviation security measures for all global flights entering the country, instead of implementing the laptop ban.

The Department of Homeland Security has removed one city and airline from the electronics ban after Abu Dhabi International Airport and Etihad met the new elevated security standards that the department announced last week, CBS News transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave reports.

"We commend Etihad for working swiftly to implement these additional measures", he said.

"We welcome the decision by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security", an Etihad Airways spokesperson said.

"Effective immediately, the removal of the restrictions allows passengers flying to the U.S. to carry all laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices onto the aircraft, subject to enhanced security measures", it added.

The customs pre-clearance facility also allows guests to through-check their baggage to their final destination in the US.

The U.S. ban, first announced in March, now applies to nonstop U.S. -bound flights from nine global airports in Amman, Jordan; Kuwait City; Cairo; Istanbul; Jeddah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Casablanca, Morocco; Doha, Qatar; and Dubai in the UAE.

The Trump administration, citing unspecified terrorism concerns, announced in March that passengers traveling from 10 cities would be prohibited from bringing laptops and certain personal electronic devices on board with them.
