Kaspersky Lab Offers Source Code To US Govt To End Distrust

Eugene Kaspersky offers to show source code to the US government and swear in front of Congress to prove there's nothing shonky about its security software and to avert sanctions

Kaspersky Lab, the globally renowned antivirus software company, just saw its CEO say that he is willing to turn over the source code for Kaspersky products to US authorities to prove that they haven't been tampered with by the Russian government in any way. It could be that the government has uncovered genuine evidence of manipulation, however it could otherwise be due to a general distrust towards Russian-based software at a time when Russia's government is thought to be behind many hacking attacks, including a campaign to interfere with the U.S. general election. Adding to the issue, the Federal Bureau of Investigation visited the homes of about a dozen U.S. based employees to collect information on any connection between the software and Russian intelligence officials. But the security company has been hit by political sludge originating in the Senate Intelligence Committee and its equivalent of the National Defense Authorization Act disbarring the use of the company's products by the DoD.

Kaspersky confirmed the NBC report, although he said he didn't know what the focus of the FBI's questioning was. "But it's true", he said. To that extent, the source code would only prove that Kaspersky is not engaging in any dubious activities with the Russian government right now, but offers no guarantee that it will not do so in the future.

"There were several times it was close to that", he said, adding that that once a discussion about defensive cybersecurity cooperation "turned to the offensive".

"I stopped that immediately".

Kaspersky has also offered to testify before Congress on the trustworthiness of his company.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen said Kaspersky products "cannot be trusted to protect critical infrastructure".

These gestures come amidst widespread suspicion among USA intelligence officers that Kaspersky Lab operates under the Kremlin's thumb.

Kaspersky once worked for Russia's Ministry of Defence and speculators have said he may have kept his Soviet era connections while others claim it's unlikely his company could operate independently in Russian Federation. Because to do that, you have to have not just one person in the company, but a group of people that have access to different parts of our technological processes.

"We stay on the bright side", he said, "And never, never go to the dark side".

US intelligence officials have advised Congress avoid using Kaspersky products, and lawmakers have started to weigh the possibility of banning the company from the Pentagon over fears of involvement from the Russian government.
