The engine problem was blamed on a birdstrike and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority has confirmed plover carcasses were found at Gold Coast Airport. Passenger Warren King said the fire was "on the engine itself and went back 20-30 feet".

An AirAsia flight to Malaysia was forced to return to Australia shortly after take-off following a suspected bird strike, the carrier said Tuesday, the second incident involving the airline in the country in two weeks.

AirAsia X said birds struck the plane's starboard engine shortly after take-off about 10.20pm on Monday, leading to the decision to ground the plane an hour later.

JEDDAH: A jet liner carrying 359 people was forced to make an emergency landing after a suspected bird strike left passengers shaken.

Passengers aboard AirAsia X flight D7207 yesterday said sparks were seen coming out from the aircraft engine.

Controversially, passengers on that flight recalled being told to "Say a prayer" as they attempted to return safely.

All 345 passengers and 14 crew on board were unharmed.
