BBY Stock Crashes - Here's Why Best Buy is Toast

Amazon wants to come to your house to set up Alexa

Amazon declined to comment on Recode's story, but job listings for "field technicians" in Hoboken, Miami, Houston and Las Vegas show that a major expansion of the service is in the works.

Wonder who Amazon is going after...? Best Buy has mostly escaped the pressure of the Amazon effect, but was hit Monday by a Recode report that Amazon has been hiring a team of people to offer in-home product installations, competing with Best Buy's "Geek Squad". These new full-time Amazon employees will do everything from assist clients in the device purchasing process to setting up heating and cooling systems, home entertainment centers, and home security systems. Amazon won't set up just any device, but it handles some of the common brands: Philips Hue lights, Ecobee thermostats, Eero WiFi routers and Ring doorbells are some of the eligible gadgets.

The service is now only available in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Jose, CA. Essentially an Angie's List competitor, Amazon Home Services is available across the US today. In addition to the installations, Amazon is also offering free 45-minute Alexa Smart Home Consultations, in which Amazon's experts demo popular products and answer consumer questions. First, Amazon wants to solidify its place as the go-to choice for all our purchases and owning the smart home space is a part of that. Right now, the company will send a technician to your home for about $99, if you live in one of several West Coast cities.

Amazon is pushing Alexa as the platform of choice for smart home control, while Best Buy is promoting both Alexa and Google Home.

In-home consultations are free (similar to Geek Squad) while the installations will come with a fee (also similar to Geek Squad).

If Amazon sinks its teeth into this business, it may drive customers to buy products from Amazon instead of from a Best Buy.

Amazon's new push into smart home consulting is something Apple should be watching closely because advocating for HomeKit needs to go beyond device makers promoting compatibility.
