Looks like the Lakers chose to be players in NBA Free Agency after all.

Five days after the Detroit Pistons pulled Caldwell-Pope's qualifying offer in the wake of the trade for Avery Bradley, making Caldwell-Pope an unrestricted free agent, Caldwell-Pope has reportedly landed with the Los Angeles Lakers.

It was clear Kentavious Caldwell-Pope wasn't going to return to the Pistons when the team renounced his rights last week. Signing the free agent could fulfill the Lakers' desire to acquire a point guard on a one-year deal. Other teams in talks with Caldwell-Pope that have some cap space have been looking to create more, sources said.

It didn't take long for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and the Los Angeles Lakers to come to an agreement.

Caldwell-Pope will miss the first two games of the 2017-18 season after the National Basketball Association suspended him last month following his guilty plea to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in Auburn Hills, Mich. The Lakers roster now sits at 14 players.

He saved face during the playoffs, when he averaged 11.5 points, 10 assists and 8.5 rebounds per game in two wins over the Celtics to begin the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

What Would Rondo Bring to the Lakers? It'd also be interesting to see how Caldwell-Pope and Clarkson would wind up on the depth chart at shooting guard, but it's hard to envision Clarkson being pushed back to the second-team at this point. That it happened this late in the offseason left Caldwell-Pope without many options, and played right into the Lakers' hands.

The fact that the Lakers would like to do one-year deals with both players doesn't mean that one (or both) couldn't be a part of their future. By many projections, he was in line possibly to get a maximum offer of four years and $106 million from another team, which the Pistons would have been able to match.

The person who told the AP about the contract spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the deal hasn't been announced.
