Were an attacker to gain access to a person's PIN, they could theoretically hijack the victim's Verizon account and phone number.

The server was controlled by a Nice Systems employee and was open to anyone who knew or stumbled upon the easy-to-guess URL.

The data found on the server included six folders with with customer records that also referenced that some of the customers' calls were being recorded and given a "frustration score". These Verizon Data leaks were brought to light by UpGuard, a cyber security firm.

The records were of subscribers who called the customer services of Verizon in the past 6 months. In this case, it wasn't Verizon itself that is responsible for the leak, but rather a third-party company partnered with Verizon.

Verizon responded to a recent data breach that affected millions of customer accounts.

Employed to help channel customer service calls, Nice botched a simple cloud server security setting, making customer data public to anyone with a link. Initial reports from them indicated that as many as 14 Million Verizon users might be at risk. "In other words, there has been no loss or theft of Verizon or Verizon customer information", Verizon said in a statement. In addition to name, address, and phone number, some of the Verizon customer data included plain text PINs.

Regardless of its current connection to NICE, the S3 data "bucket" was unintentionally left exposed and ultimately discovered by UpGuard's Chris Vickery. That is the situation Verizon finds itself in-the nation's largest wireless carrier confirmed that certain information belonging to 6 million customers has leaked online. Verizon conducted an investigation into the matter and concluded that the data had not been accessed by any "external parties".

Verizon told ZDNet that it believes no one actually accessed the data, and the data didn't contain truly sensitive information like social security numbers or bank accounts, but it's a wake-up call to anyone using cloud storage. However, it was not until June 22 - more than a week later - that Verizon and NICE managed to close the breach.

"The long duration of time between the initial June 13th notification to Verizon by UpGuard of this data exposure, and the ultimate closure of the breach on June 22nd, is troubling", Upguard wrote.
