YouTube combating extremism by redirecting users to videos debunking extremist narratives

YouTube will redirect you away from extremist videos

In a long article on the topic, Motherboard writes, "I$3 n order to prevent users from flagging explicit or inflammatory extremist videos, terrorist media groups and disseminators like The Upload Knights and AQ's As-Sahab Media Foundation often label YouTube videos as 'unlisted, ' meaning that the videos can not be searched-only accessed if you are given the link". Under the new technology, when a potential ISIS recruit searches for extremist content, he will be directed to videos that work toward deconstructing terrorist groups.

Apparently it seems to be working as a pilot program for the Redirect Method led to 320,000 individuals viewing "over half a million minutes of the 116 videos we selected to refute ISIS's recruiting themes".

Jigsaw - Alphabet's security incubator - and counter-extremist startup Moonshot CVE partnered up to create the Redirect Method.

In a blog post released on Thursday, YouTube said it would redirect people who are searching for terrorist or extremist content and steer them toward videos that debunk the messages that are utilized by extremist groups. When someone searches for extremist content on YouTube, the site will show them a playlist of videos that argue against extremism.

"This early product integration of the Redirect Method on YouTube is our latest effort to provide more resources and more content that can help change minds of people at risk of being radicalized", Google's blog post says.

"Using machine learning to dynamically update the search query terms".

YouTube is also collaborating with several NGOs to create video content to counter the message of these extremist videos. Finally, Google also wants to expand the Redirect Method to Europe.

The Redirect Project was developed by the search titan to develop software based on YouTube's advertising tools. Governments have since criticized the most influential social media platforms for not taking enough steps to curb extremism (despite the possible censorship and free speech issues). Last month, YouTube joined with Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter to form a new coalition to make their services "hostile to terrorists and violent extremists".
