Six killed as clashes erupt in standoff over mosque in Jerusalem

Palestinians fear Israel is trying to retake the holy site of al Aqsa by stealth

Officials set up new security cameras at the entrance to the holy site in Jerusalem as it considers an "alternative" to the metal detectors it installed after two Israeli policemen were killed nearby earlier this month.

On Friday, Egypt called on Israel to immediately stop its violent actions and cancel its escalated security measures against Palestinians in Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque area, expressing "deep concern".

Also, three Palestinians have been killed in street clashes with Israeli forces in Jerusalem al-Quds and three Israelis in an alleged stabbing attack at a West Bank settlement.

The emergency protest called for by the Palestinian Forum in Britain saw protesters from all ages, and organizers said they held the protest to attract attention to Israel's aggression in Jerusalem.

Palestinians have been refusing to enter the compound since then, and hundreds have been holding prayers outside, with clashes occasionally breaking out with Israeli police.

A PALESTINIAN man was shot dead by an Israeli settler yesterday in occupied East Jerusalem amid protests over new clampdowns on access to the Al-Aqsa mosque.

What triggered the violence at al-Aqsa Mosque compound?

Two Palestinians were martyred in clashes with Israeli occupation forces Saturday over restrictive Israeli measures at Al-Aqsa holy Mosque.

Israel chose to install the metal detectors at the entry point to the shrine in Beit-ul-Muqaddas on Sunday, after the killing of two Israeli security forces on July 14.

It is considered the third-holiest site in Islam and the most sacred for Jews.

The assailant was shot by Israeli police and is hospitalized in Israel.

The main weekly prayers on Fridays draw the largest number of worshippers.

By contrast, the Red Crescent reported at least 450 Palestinians were wounded in the demonstrations, almost half from tear gas.

They were finishing dinner when the Palestinian attacker came in through a window and went on a rampage, knifing three family members to death.
