Charlie Gard's Hospital Receiving Violent Threats; Tensions Mount as Fight Continues

The 11-month-old boy who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage is currently the subject of a legal battle between his parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard, and the hospital

A lawyer representing Gard's parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard told judge Nicholas Francis at London's High Court that "time had run out" and that they had made their decision after seeing the 11-month-old's latest brain scans.

The parents of Charlie Gard, a terminally ill baby, have been fighting for getting him treated while the British Hospital and the court refused to accept it.

The parents had made the decision to end the legal battle following the latest medical reports and scans, although they said that the USA and Italian hospitals that could conduct the treatment were still willing to help.

The legal battle with Great Ormond Street Hospital has attracted huge media attention after the hospital argued for Charlie's life support to be turned off.

Charlie Gard's parents gave up the legal battle to save their son's life Monday morning, as it is now too late to treat him.

She said "a whole lot of time has been wasted" and said she hoped Charlie's life would not be in vain.

Recent tests found Charlie has irreversible muscular damage.

The hospital treating Charlie Gard in London said that it has been receiving death threats, and staff members are being subjected to abuse due to the highly controversial case.

"The parents worst nightmare have been confirmed", Armstrong said, explaining that USA neurologist Dr. Michio Hirano had said he was no longer willing to offer the baby experimental therapy after he saw the results of a new MRI scan last week.

Instead, the parents' lawyer stood up to say they were ending their legal fight.

"The question we need to ask ourselves", he said, "is how we managed to have a hearing back in April where we heard from the American expert but the American expert had not actually seen Charlie first to make an assessment". "It is hoped that those who, like the professor, have provided the opinions that have so sustained Charlie's parents, their hopes and thus this protracted litigation with its many consequences, will also find much upon which to reflect".

Pope Francis and the us president, Donald Trump had both lent their support to the parents of the child. He said they wanted lessons to be learned. Hirano believes there is at least a 10-percent chance that his treatment could improve Charlie's condition.

The staff are being targeted by protesters opposed to GOSH's role in the treatment of Charlie, where doctors are seeking permission to turn off the baby's life-support machine.

Grant Armstrong says it is "worthy of a Greek tragedy" that Charlie's parents must withdraw their appeal, just as they were about to present new evidence to a court.

After the High Court hearing ended, GOSH said: "All of GOSH's thoughts go with Charlie and his mother and father - the hospital wishes each of them peace in their hearts at the end of this day and each day to come".

Parents of critically ill baby Charlie Gard, Chris Gard (L) Connie Yates (R) deliver a statement outside the High Court in central London, Britain, 24 July 2017.

While Judge Francis paid tribute to Ms Yates and Mr Gard for the love and care they had given to their son.
