McCain returning to Washington on eve of next Senate health care vote

Psychiatry group tells members they can defy 'Goldwater rule' and comment on Trump's mental health

Rand Paul, R-Ky., said Monday on Fox News that senators have "no earthly idea" what GOP healthcare bill they will be voting for Tuesday. If that vote is approved, the Senate would begin debating a bill to repeal and replace President Barack Obama's signature domestic achievement, but nobody expects that measure to reach a final vote. His return comes as the Senate is preparing to consider proposals to reform health care.

The approach was not flying with some Republicans. Tell us. We'd kind of like to know.

Senator Lisa Murkowski, who has opposed various earlier versions of the legislation, sounded unsure about what bill was being considered Tuesday, or whether she would vote to begin debate on it.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer urged his GOP colleagues to back away from opening debate.

With less than three weeks before the Senate is to leave Washington for its already-delayed summer recess, Trump took to his bully pulpit and demanded his party get in line.

The most recent vote on the latest draft of the healthcare bill was postponed in the wake of McCain's surgery and hospitalization, a delay which shortly resulted in the death of the bill as two Republican Senators turned against it.

Critics say Obamacare is often unaffordable for many Americans, punishes Americans with fines for not opting into this often expensive plan and props up insurance companies with taxpayer dollars.

"Right now we aren't producing much for the American people", he said.

Trump implored fellow Republicans to make good on a promise to repeal the ACA, widely known as Obamacare, that has been a staple of their rhetoric for seven years.

Republicans hold a slim 52-48 majority in the upper chamber.

Stunningly, Senator John McCain (R-AZ), who announced just last week he has a likely fatal form of brain cancer after he flew home to have a blood clot removed, flew back to D.C. Tuesday and cast his vote to proceed on the bill to strip health care coverage from millions. Sen.

Republicans need 51 votes to proceed to the legislation, which would then be subjected to what is expected to be a lengthy amendment process.

We worked with NPR member station reporters and editors to create an interactive Q&A on how key elements of the bills would affect people in different states. Most senators don't know exactly what it is they're going to be voting on. John McCain has returned to the Senate for a vote concerning healthcare.

After making several efforts, the Republicans still haven't been able to repeal and replace Obamacare.
