Incessant Rains Trigger Flood-Like Situation In Gujarat, NDRF Rescues 200 Stranded People

At least 48 people have been killed as large swaths of western India have been lashed by heavy monsoon rains and flooding.

Authorities found the bodies in two villages in hard-hit Banaskantha district, Gujarat, as floodwaters receded, said assistant superintendent of police Aksharaj Makwana. According to Airport sources, the patches have been found on runway after incessant heavy rains.

The Army, IAF, NDRF and local teams have intensified rescue and relief operations as several parts of the two districts are inundated. Amreli, Valsad, and Kandla have been the worst hit districts in the state as heavy rain continues for over 24 hours.

In Rajasthan, four MI-17V5 helicopters of the IAF from its bases at Jamnagar, Jodhpur and Phalodi have been assigned target areas for conduct of relief operations.

Around 29,242 people are bearing the brunt of floods in 157 villages across 10 districts of Assam state, where floods wreaked havoc has claimed 77 lives till date. Around 11,000 people have been evacuated in Banaskantha district alone.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani toured the affected areas in a boat to take stock of the situation.

The state government is also planning to bring in divers from the Indian Navy for assistance in flooded regions of Banaskantha. AIR correspondent reports that NGOs and Voluntary organisations have come out in big numbers for sending relief materials to the affected people. At least 500 medical professionals including doctors, paramedics and health workers have fanned out across the district to survey the flood-hit areas and distribute chlorine tablets and ORS packets to ensure that there is no outbreak of any epidemic. The Rajkot-Ahmedabad national highway is also closed due to water-logging.

In all, the entirety of Gujarat has registered 534 mm of rain, which is 66 percent of its seasonal average of 810 mm. Assam had asked the Centre for Rs 2,393 crore in funds to carry out repairs in the aftermath of the statewide floods.
