Trump criticized over military ban on transgender people

President Trump at an Ohio rally on Tuesday

In a three-part announcement issued Wednesday morning via Twitter, Trump wrote that "the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military".

President Donald Trump's plans to reinstate a ban on transgender people serving in the military takes the U.S. off a short list of countries that allow individuals to serve in the armed forces regardless of gender identity.

The White House said it doesn't have a timeline for the Department of Defense as to how exactly this new policy would work. But with his move Wednesday to ban transgender people from military service, on top of other actions and appointments, they now see him as openly hostile.

The Pentagon commissioned a six-month study before lifting the ban, estimating that transgender service member treatments would increase military health care costs between $2.4 million and $8.4 million, according to the LA Times. "This is a shocking and ignorant attack on our military and on transgender troops who have been serving honorably and effectively for the past year".

News 6 contacted local lawmakers for reaction on Trump's transgender ban.

A USA official told CNN that Mattis was consulted on Trump's plan to announce a transgender military ban.

Trump's surprise announcement, in a series of Twitter posts on Wednesday, drew condemnation from rights groups and some lawmakers in both USA political parties as discrimination with purely political motives.

Aaron Belkin, a gay man and the longtime director of the center, said Trump is "creating a worse version of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell, '" and said that discrimination harms military readiness. "The Pentagon isn't defying orders", Hasson said, "They're waiting for them". "There are existing military rules and regulations that allow transgender people to serve and even the commander-in-chief can not change those rules and regulations via Twitter". As a transgender Air Force veteran, Zabel knows all too well the impact a change in policy like this could have, and also how hypocritical an attempt to pass this off as being for the good of the military is.

"Our nation's military leaders are in the best position to decide which policies will maintain a strong national defense and uphold national security", he said in a statement.

The comedian then defended the "amazingly courageous trans people" who should be able to join the military, as well as those who are already serving or who have in the past.

As one of the first openly transgender people in the military, Fox knows this from personal experience.
