The largest trial over Turkey's coup attempt past year started in Ankara on Tuesday, with 486 suspects expected to appear in court. He rejects the charges and denies any involvement in the coup attempt. Families of those killed or wounded protested outside the courthouse, with some throwing hangman's nooses or stones toward the defendants as they arrived under tight guard, shouting "murderers" and demanding that the death penalty be reinstated.

Following the coup, the government instituted a strict state of emergency, granting itself wide-ranging powers.

Among those awaiting trial include Akin Ozturk, a former air force chief, theology lecturer Adil Oksuz, whom Turkish officials allege was the so-called "imam" of the plot and Fethullah Gulen, the US-based Muslim cleric-turned-businessman accused of ordering the coup attempt on July 15.

The defendants face charges from attempting to assassinate the president to murder. Some 30 coup plotters were also killed.

Critics say Mr Erdogan is using the purge that followed the coup to stifle political dissent.

According to the Anadolu news agency, most defendants at the trial, the largest judicial process of the case so far, are high-ranking military suspects who led the failed coup from the Akinci air base in the north-west of the Turkish capital.
