He expressed sadness over the incident via twitter saying: "I join all Nigerians in grieving today's horrific massacre of innocent worshippers in St. Philip's Catholic Church in Anambra State".

He commiserated with Gov. Willie Obiano, the Catholic Church, Ozubulu community as well as the families of the deceased and injured.

The commissioner said information available to police showed that the attacker was speaking undiluted Igbo Language at the time he was firing at worshippers.

THISDAY gathered that about 47 persons were killed in the attack, with several others wounded and are already being attended to at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi.

The shooting is said to have occurred during church service while worshipers were still inside the church building on Sunday morning.

Garba Umar, commissioner of the Anambra state police command, has dismissed the insinuation that the Boko Haram sect carried out the attack at St. Philip Catholic church in Ekwusigo local government area of the state.

"My heart goes to the bereaved at this moment of pain".

On his part, Oseloka Obaze, a former Secretary to Anambra Government, said such callous attacks dehumanised the society.

According to observers who say there were multiple shooters, they also described the gunmen as having their faces covered.

"Such violent incidents dehumanise our society".

Mr. Oye, who described the attack as wicked, urged the security agencies to unravel those responsible for the dastardly act.

Governor Obiano condemned the attack and promised to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.

Chief Jude Emecheta, who hails from Ozubulu, told NAN that "a dark cloud has befallen my peaceful town".

He said that after gunmen shot sporadically at worshippers during an early morning mass, many people were injured while some of the victims died on their way to the hospital.
