Special counsel Robert Mueller asks White House for documents on Michael Flynn

JUNE 21 2017 FILE

Investigators had also questioned witnesses over whether Flynn received secret payments from the Turkish government at the end of the 2016 presidential campaign-suggesting the probe's scope has widened to examine Flynn's financial dealings.

Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating allegations of Russian interference in last year's presidential election, has asked for documents on Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser.

But the investigation team led by special counsel Robert Mueller want to know if the Turkish government was behind the payments or if Mr Alptekin was bribed to hide the source of the money, according to the New York Times.

The document request was not a formal subpoena.

Mueller has convened a grand jury in D.C. for the Russian Federation probe, a sign that the investigation into Russia's interference in the presidential election and Moscow's ties to the Trump campaign is heating up.

Asked to comment on the article in the New York Times, one of the lawyers for Donald Trump, Ty Cobb, said that the White House had no intention of publicly discussing its "specific communications" with Mr. Mueller, but that it would "continue to cooperate fully with the special prosecutor".

"We've said before we're collaborating with the special counsel on an ongoing basis", he told the newspaper."It's full cooperation mode as far as we are concerned", he said, according to the report.

Mr Mueller was then appointed to look into whether the Kremlin had tried to meddle in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign colluded with them in doing so.
