The Dow Jones' tech-sector holdings have been the main driver, which is no surprise considering technology stocks have also powered the all-time highs in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite, too.

But much better data on U.S. job openings from a survey called JOLTS shocked the market, leading equities on both sides of the Atlantic to push into positive territory.

"New record highs were registered last week as the flow of earnings continued positive with major corporations offering positive guidance going forward", said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at First Standard Financial.

Second-quarter earnings have grown by 10.1 percent, exceeding S&P Capital IQ predicted earnings of 6.2 percent.

The Dow is on track to post gains for the 11th straight session, the blue-chip index's longest streak for consecutive gains since February, driven by a strong quarterly earnings season.

Goldman Sachs was up 0.77 percent and JPMorgan 0.61 percent.

The S&P hasn't had a move of more than 0.5 percent since July and has fallen more than 1 percent only twice this year.
