Contaminated eggs supplied to Irish food businesses, says FSAI

Tainted egg scandal France demands more information

"It relates to two managers at the company that allegedly used the substance (fipronil) at poultry farms", spokeswoman Marieke van der Molen said, with Dutch media naming the suspects' company as Chickfriend.

They have reportedly pinned the source of the insecticide to a supplier of cleaning products in the Netherlands.

A statement from the FSA said: "Investigations into the Fipronil incident in Europe continue". It did not name the company directly, however.

They were held after coordinated raids by Dutch and Belgian investigators, who are looking into how the insecticide, which is potentially harmful to humans, made it to market.

In the Netherlands, investigators seized the suspects' bank assets and real estate "because crime can not be rewarded", they said.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the latest food scandal to hit Europe, Dutch prosecutors said.

The insecticide can damage people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands if eaten in large quantities.

Last week, the UK's FSA said around 21,000 eggs were shipped to the country; today, it said it was "likely that the number of eggs that have come to the United Kingdom is closer to 700,000".

At least 11 European states have recalled eggs from their grocery stores after a scandal broke out around risky fipronil insecticide contamination, a source in the European Commission told Sputnik on Friday.

It is thought that fipronil was added to disinfectant used on some chicken farms.

Testing of eggs on farms is under way across the United Kingdom and results to date for England and Wales show no exposure to Fipronil.

EU Trade and Agriculture spokesman Daniel Rosario said on Friday that farms were shut down in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France after authorities confirmed that fipronil had been used.

Supermarkets in several European countries have already started pulling million of eggs from the shelves.

Numerous eggs were mixed with others which had not come from affected farms so Fipronil residues would be highly diluted, the FSA said.

It has since emerged Belgian officials knew about the contamination in June, but did not make the information public.

Belgian investigators meanwhile identified 26 people or companies as suspects during the 11 raids by police and food safety agency officers, for offences including fraud and breaking European Union food laws.
