Chennai: The ruling faction of AIADMK with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswamy on Thursday chose in effect to defy party deputy general secretary T.T.V. Dinakaran.
Using the IPC section 420 to label the Chief Minister a "cheat", the former Rajya Sabha MP stated, "Misuse of the AIADMK letterhead is forgery and cheating". In his statement, Palanisami said that Dinakaran's appointment was unacceptable, improper and invalid. The OPS camp, after participating in the swearing in ceremony, alsopetitioned the Election Commission challenging the appointment of General Secretary V K Sasikala and Dinakaran of the party.
Former chief minister Panneerselvam had last week said that the leaders in the rival camp were "only making comments" on the unification, but not making much effort.
Sources also told Deccan Chronicle that there was a high probability of Palaniswami and Panneerselvam meeting in New Delhi to stitch up the merger that is expected to infuse stability into the AIADMK government, which has been facing uncertainty ever since Jayalalithaa passed away.
Reminding EPS that it was his aunt and AIADMK (Amma) General Secretary VK Sasikala who made him Chief Minister, TTV went on to state that he had the power to take action against those who had joined hands with the betrayers (OPS faction). He also cited precedence to counter the charge by both OPS and EPS factions that his return to the party was illegal because he had been removed by Jayalalithaa long ago.
The BJP's offer to play peacemaker between the two factions of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) seems more than just mediation, especially in the wake of the recent developments in Tamil Nadu. He is said to have offered to OPS the post of deputy CM. The move comes as a massive blow to the Sasikala faction of the party. That would mean Palanisami manages the government while the party is controlled by OPS. A resolution adopted at a meeting of the chief minister's faction yesterday had said the appointment of Dhinakaran was against the party rules and that its cadres have been asked to ignore his directives. Dinakaran was the party candidate in the bypoll necessitated by the death of Jayalalithaa.
