US Encourages India, China To Have Direct Dialogue To Resolve Issues

No confrontation between Indian, Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh

Chinese troops threw stones at Indian soldiers near Pangong Lake, a major tourist attraction in the picturesque mountain region of Ladakh on Tuesday, an Indian defence official said.

Indian and Chinese soldiers have been engaged in a standoff in Doklam for over a months now.

The website of New Delhi-based English weekly India Today quoted a report by the Indian military intelligence, which said the use of stones was unprecedented and appeared meant to heighten tension without using lethal weapons. He said some soldiers from both sides received minor injuries.

"There was an altercation near the Pangong lake", said a police officer in Srinagar, the capital of India's Jammu and Kashmir state, under which the area falls. "We continue to encourage both parties to have conversations", it added. The Pangong lake area lies over 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) high on the Tibetan plateau. Explaining this further, the article claimed Chinese companies will first face a setback due to the anti-dumping measures, while Indian consumers will also face loss. The area is disputed between China and Bhutan. Chinese state media have warned India of a fate worse than its crushing defeat in a brief border war in 1962. "India must immediately and unconditionally withdraw all its trespassing troops and equipment back to the Indian side of the border", the office said in a statement. The Chinese Foreign Ministry reacted to a report where China had allegedly offered to move its troops back 100 meters, after India sought the pullback of Chinese troops by 250 metres.

India's political environment makes it easier for politicians to confront China than improve ties with it. Modi has opted for confrontation with China, with the consideration that by challenging China, the Modi government can maintain India's influence and hegemony in South Asia, it said.
